About Palm Beach Group Barbados

The company began in 1969 with the first hotel opening in 1971
Company History
On 25th September 1969 the Palm Beach Hotel company was established with the view of building and operating an apartment hotel called Asta.
Asta was the brainchild of the Astaphan family of the island of Dominica, West Indies, (from whom Asta derives its name). Mr. Astaphan asked his friend Basil Gooding of Barbados, an insurance salesman, to identify a suitable location for such a venture. A swamp at Palm Beach was identified and later purchased from Mr. Carlos B. Clarke with the Astaphan family owning 80% and Basil Gooding 20%. The original idea was to build 20-30 rooms. The higher than expected cost of the land caused the investors to increase the size for economic viability.
The swamp was filled with the rubble and burnt inventory of the Cave Shepherd fire. Cave Shepherd was eventually rebuilt and is now the leading department store in Barbados.
A 55-room Asta opened three months late in February 1971 with 40 employees, and trading under the name Asta Apartment Hotel. The management was former insurance executives Basil Gooding and Romeo Menezes and their spouses.

Developments:

  • Purchase of the adjacent Golden Dawn Beach Apartel Limited and the incorporation into Asta in 1997 as Block A.
  • Purchase of the adjacent Wrens Court in 2000. This allowed Asta to expand its car parking area.
  • Purchase of the adjacent Chattel Plaza in 2001. This was incorporated into the Asta complex in 2003 to provide a uniquely designed leisure and dining facility.
  • The acquisition of the50-room Allamanda Beach Hotel in 2002.
  • Purchase of the adjacent ‘Martindales’ in 2002. This was incorporated into the Asta complex in 2003 to provide a new entrance directly on the main highway.
  • The renovation of all rooms at Asta, the increase in the size of the conference centre, and the increase of the room stock to 150 rooms in 2003 including 12 wheelchair accessible rooms.
  • The renaming and rebranding in 2003 of Asta Beach Resort to Amaryllis Beach Resort.
  • The purchase of Sandy Beach Island Resort in 2005, closing for four months from July to October for some renovations of public areas, and reopening in November 2005 as the All Inclusive Sandy Bay Beach Club.
